Transcoding Video for the Nokia E65
One of the nicer things about my new company phone, a Nokia E65, is the fact that is has rather nice video support. The phone supports H.264 / MPEG-4 Part 10 video natively. With a little transcoding magic, I can watch TV shows (Anime fansubs to be exact) on the bus to/from work. In an effort to save other people some time I figured that documenting the transcoding options here would be a good idea... The same, or similar settings probably work for most newer Nokia 3G phones.
First of all, I use the SUPER media encoder to do my transcoding. It has a horrible user interface and doesn't seem to like Vista (I use XP at home), but it gets the job done with a minimum of fuss. VLC would probably work just as well, search the docs for transcoding... Anyway: These are the settings that work for me:
- Output container: MP4
- Output video codec: H.264
- Output audio codec: AAC
- Video resolution at 320x240 (native for the E65), 15 fps, bitrate at 144 kbps
- Audio sampling rate 24000, mono, bitrate at 32 kbps
At these settings, twenty minutes of video eat about 30 megs of space. Given that a 2 GB memory card for an E65 was something like 30 Euros, let's just say that space isn't an issue...
